BEAR LAKE, PA – Chub Frank is ready to get some rest. The star driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ is certainly in need of a breather from the summer grind after his sixth-place finish in Tuesday night’s Firecracker 100 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., completed a grueling stretch of World of Outlaws Late Model Series action that kept him away from home for three weeks. Chub’s solid performance in the $40,000-to-win spectacular at Lernerville came after he experienced an especially frustrating Alltel Ohio Speedweek. He registered just one top-10 finish in the four events that comprised the WoO LMS swing, contributing to his fall from 76 points behind leader Darrell Lanigan when the ‘Wild West Tour’ began on July 9 to his current 206 points in arrears of Lanigan. “We just need to get back and get regrouped,” said Chub, who sits fourth in the WoO LMS points standings after 31 events. “We’re just tired. We’ve been on the road for three weeks and that’s just hard on everybody.” Chub did get to stop at his Bear Lake, Pa., shop for a day following Sunday night’s WoO LMS show at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa., but he certainly didn’t have as much time as he would have liked to gear up for the completion of Lernerville’s crown-jewel program, which had its second night rained out last month. “I know we had to have the Firecracker when we did because everyone was up here in the area, but running the race after being on the road for three weeks didn’t help any of us,” said Chub. “Clint (Smith), (Shane) Clanton and (Tim) Fuller were at my shop the last two days getting ready for Lernerville and their stuff was all torn up. Our stuff wasn’t quite as bad, but it was a thrash for all of us just to get on the road to Lernerville. “I’m happy that we were at least able to get a decent finish (at Lernerville). We had a pretty good car, but now we’ll go home, rebuild everything, put on new parts and sheet metal and go back at it for the rest of the season.” The Alltel Ohio Speedweek events were forgettable for Chub, who never quite got on track in any of the races. He qualified through a B-Main all four nights (winning two of them), so his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* was mired deep in the starting field of each A-Main. Chub started the Speedweek off with a rare DNF on Thursday night (July 24) at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio, finishing 23rd after retiring due to a broken panhard mount on lap 35 of the 40-lap headliner. He followed that disappointment with finishes of 12th on Friday night at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio (started 17th); 10th on Saturday night at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio (after a four-hour rain delay, he started 17th and had to rally from a pit stop on lap 17); and 13th on Sunday night at Eriez Speedway (started 19th). “We just struggled all week,” said Chub. “I don’t know what we were missing. Neither car performed as good as I’d like it to. “I really think we’ll find some stuff when we get back home. You get to racing it that many times without really going through it like you should, and you’ll find stuff that wasn’t right.” Chub plans to take this weekend off from competition to retool his team’s equipment. |
