Chub Frank Still Looking To Bust Out Of Slump

After Visit To Screven Motor Speedway

BEAR LAKE, PA – Chub Frank is still looking for a slump-busting outing.

The veteran racer known as ‘Chubzilla’ failed to pick up some much-needed momentum on Saturday night, finishing a quiet 12th in the 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga.

A trouble-filled time-trial run signaled the start of a difficult visit to the Peach State for Chub. He timed a dismal 33rd out of 34 drivers thanks to an unexpected mechanical problem that left him unable to smoothly negotiate the three-eighths-mile oval.

“The three-wheel brake switch was on backwards,” said Chub, who slid high in the corners on both of his qualifying circuits. “We don’t know exactly what the heck happened. I know we built the car together in a hurry, but we shouldn’t have had that problem.

“The right-front wheel was just hanging up (during time trials) and it shoved over the cushion. We only needed three-wheel brakes, not four.”

Buried at the rear of the night’s first heat due to his qualifying woes, Chub advanced only to a sixth-place finish and missed transferring by two spots. He made the feature cut with a second-place finish in the first B-Main, then improved from the 19th starting spot to finish 12th (one lap down) in the A-Main behind the wheel of his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*

“We had everything figured out by time we got to the feature,” said Chub. “But we were so far behind, we couldn’t catch back up. You can’t get behind when you’re running against this kind of competition.”

Chub also competed in WoO LMS action on Friday night at Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway, but rain during the first B-Main forced officials to postpone the remainder of the program to Tues., Oct. 7. Chub is scheduled to start 11th in the 50-lap A-Main after finishing third in a heat race at the four-tenths-mile oval.

The 12th-place finish at Screven dropped Chub one spot in the WoO LMS points standings, to fifth. He’s now 226 points behind leader Darrell Lanigan.

Chub stayed in Georgia following Screven’s event, parking at fellow tour regular Shane Clanton’s shop in Locust Grove, Ga., to spend some time working on his equipment in preparation for this week’s WoO LMS events at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. (‘Scorcher’ presented by Alltel Wireless on Wednesday and Thursday) and K-C Raceway in Alma, Ohio (Saturday). Frank and his crew enjoyed a relaxing Sunday barbeque and pool party hosted by Clanton, who also entertained the Tim Fuller and Clint Smith teams.
